From Joyce's Desk: International Day of Climate Action
"On 24 October, people in 181 countries came together for the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet's history. At over 5200 events around the world, people gathered to call for strong action and bold leadership on the climate crisis." ~350.org

The International Day of Climate Action that took place this past Saturday turned out to be quite an event with 5245 actions in 181 countries and 19,000 photos posted. People all over the world brought attention to the very important number of "350". 350 parts per million is the amount of C02 scientists believe we should get back down to in order to avoid runaway climate change.
Photo posted to 350.org's photostream on Flickr
Our little beach community of Pacifica came out to show it's support as well. I brought hubby and son out with me to participate in our "action", which was organized by the Pacifica Climate Committee, Pacifica Beach Coalition and P-Town Classic. Even though it was foggy and chilly that morning, it was great to meet our fellow Pacificans - residents, business owners, surfers, kids, parents, grandparents, dogs... just everyday people (and animals) who care about this planet we live on.

VIDEO: 1958 - Global Warming - It's NOT newly known
Nearly half a century before Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth, this film was made. But what does it reveal? That our scientists have known for over two generations about this danger, but our politicians and citizenry have chosen to ignore the dangerous implications of this fact until it really is too late to avoid the preventable consequences."

Want America to be a Climate Leader?
The sweepstakes begins September 23, 2009, during the first ever “Climate Week” happening in New York City, and continues until prizes are awarded by random drawing on December 7, 2009, when the United Nations gathers in Copenhagen for the COP15 Climate Change Conference. When you sign up, you'll be entered to win from hundreds of green prizes from your favorite companies (yup, Coco-Zen is one of them). You will also receive a weekly email from WE ADD UP with simple and easy call to actions that help our voices be heard regarding climate change. Non-profit organizations, including 350.0rg and 1Sky, will be leading us on what to do.
Collectively, we’re going to add up to big change. And, it’s just about time, too. World leaders are meeting in Copenhagen in December to hopefully come to an international agreement on the world-wide reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. If America is going to truly be a leader, our leaders need to hear from us now. So, let’s realize our power and show that we add up.
There will be over 230 winners in the Climate Action Giveaway and each prize will help you lead a more sustainable lifestyle. Enter to Win today! - http://www.climategiveaway.com
*Oh, and by the way...we'll be giving away some chocolates and body treats for the sweepstakes!

VIDEO: Food Scarcity and Climate Change
Summary:
"Scientists calculate that temperatures will keep rising for the next 50 years, no matter how drastically we cut greenhouse gas emissions. Open Society Fellow Mark Hertsgaard and Sara Scherr, founder of Ecoagriculture Partners, discuss the implications of this somber reality for food production and global hunger.
The panelists assess the severity of the problem, which is worsened by widespread soil erosion and dwindling rainfall in crop-growing regions. They also identify cause for hope. New farming techniques can boost crop yields while enabling plants to store carbon.
The event is moderated by Ross Gelbspan, author of two acclaimed books on climate change: Boiling Point and The Heat is On."
