Thank you and goodbye, sort of...

Dear Friends, Fans and Loyal Customers,

After these many years of making chocolates and helping to spread the word on Fair Trade, I've decided that it's time to say goodbye as I move onto other personal endeavors.

Closing up shop...
Coco-Zen will be closing over the next couple of months. Beginning November 1, Coco-Zen will no longer be producing "edible" treats. Only our "wearable" Chocolate Body Treats and a few Green Living items will be available for purchase. These will be available for the remainder of the year or until supplies run out.

Sort of...
Several people have already inquired about chocolates for holiday gifting. Since this is a special time of the year, I will be taking some "personal" orders. If you are interested in ordering chocolates for the holiday season, you can email me for information - info@coco-zen.com.

New website on Facebook...
Our current website will also be closing, as we migrate everything over to our Facebook Page. There you can visit our Shop to make purchases. We will also continue to post articles and information on Fair Trade and all things "green" that we come across.

Lastly, but most importantly...
I want to personally say thank you to everyone. I truly appreciate all the friends and family who have supported me in this wonderful adventure in chocolate. And...I especially want to thank all the wonderful customers that have visited our little shop on the web. Many of you have become friends, sharing knowledge and wonderful experiences in chocolate, Fair Trade and all manners of green living.

It's been 6 1/2 years since I was inspired to start Coco-Zen (that little face I'm holding in the picture spawned my adventure into Fair Trade and green living), and an amazing time it has been. So, it's with bittersweetness in my heart that I finally say thank you and goodbye...sort of.

Cheers to all!

From Joyce's Laptop: Summer Road Trip 2012

We're going on summer holiday!...

This year, the husband has 7 weeks of sabbatical from work (who gets that anymore??) and we didn't want to put our little guy into summer camp. So... I decided to close up shop for a couple months, and our little family is taking a cross country road trip to see all that this land has to see. We stuffed the kid into the back of our rental Prius V with all our bags and gear and headed southeast... first destination, Bryce Canyon.

I'll be posting plenty of pictures on FacebookTwitter and Pinterest and invite you to follow along as we take this amazing cross country journey. I'll post a blog here and there as time and wi-fi availability allow.

*NOTE: At the time of this post, we are already on Day 5 of our trip. Unfortunately blogging is not going to be so easy from the road. Takes too long to get photos uploaded. Please follow on Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest!

Celebrate Green interviews Joyce about Coco-Zen

Our friends over at Celebrate Green recently posed a few questions to Joyce about Coco-Zen, her philosophy, and how being a mom impacted the business...

Coco-Zen's Joyce Kushner talkin' chocolate, fair trade and tryin' to be green on Celebrate Green's radio show.

Although she was a little late (mix up on the interview time), Coco-Zen's own Joyce Kushner had a blast this morning on Celebrate Green's radio show. Hosted by mother & daughter team Lynn Colwell and Corey Lipson-Colwell, the segment was all about chocolate, fair trade, and trying to be green.

Have a listen...

From Joyce's Desk: Giving Thanks...

We're already into the craziness known as "the holiday season", but I want to take a moment to say thank you...

To family, friends, fans and followers, I just want to say how much I truly appreciate all the support and encouragement you have offered over the past year and half. This wild journey into chocolate has truly taken a life of its own, and I am grateful for the help from both old friends and new connections. Coco-Zen is growing... and I am thankful to all of you.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!

From Joyce's Desk: International Day of Climate Action

"On 24 October, people in 181 countries came together for the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet's history. At over 5200 events around the world, people gathered to call for strong action and bold leadership on the climate crisis." ~350.org

The International Day of Climate Action that took place this past Saturday turned out to be quite an event with 5245 actions in 181 countries and 19,000 photos posted. People all over the world brought attention to the very important number of "350". 350 parts per million is the amount of C02 scientists believe we should get back down to in order to avoid runaway climate change.

Photo posted to 350.org's photostream on Flickr

Our little beach community of Pacifica came out to show it's support as well. I brought hubby and son out with me to participate in our "action", which was organized by the Pacifica Climate Committee, Pacifica Beach Coalition and P-Town Classic. Even though it was foggy and chilly that morning, it was great to meet our fellow Pacificans - residents, business owners, surfers, kids, parents, grandparents, dogs... just everyday people (and animals) who care about this planet we live on.

From Joyce's Desk: Some Monday morning humor to kick off the week...

A friend of mine emailed this to me, and it had me laughing so hard that I thought I just had to share.

Happy Monday!
Joyce

PS - Thanks Mary! Sorry, we don't know who the original author is.

Thoughts From a Male Perspective:
  • I wish Google Maps had an “Avoid Ghetto” routing option.
  • More often than not, when someone is telling me a story all I can think about is that I can’t wait for them to finish so that I can tell my own story that’s not only better, but also more directly involves me.
  • Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you’re wrong.
  • I don’t understand the purpose of the line, “I don’t need to drink to have fun.” Great, no one does. But why start a fire with flint and sticks when they’ve invented the lighter?
  • I totally take back all those times I didn’t want to nap when I was younger.
  • The letters T and G are very close to each other on a keyboard. This recently became all too apparent to me and consequently I will never be ending a work email with the phrase “Regards” again.
  • Do you remember when you were a kid, playing Nintendo and it wouldn’t work? You take the cartridge out, blow in it and that would magically fix the problem. Every kid in America did that, but how did we all know how to fix the problem? There was no internet or message boards or FAQ’s. We just figured it out. Today’s kids are soft.
  • There is a great need for sarcasm font. (My personal favorite! -J)
  • Sometimes, I’ll watch a movie that I watched when I was younger and suddenly realize I had no idea what the f*** was going on when I first saw it.
  • I think everyone has a movie that they love so much; it actually becomes stressful to watch it with other people. I’ll end up wasting 90 minutes shiftily glancing around to confirm that everyone’s laughing at the right parts, then making sure I laugh just a little bit harder (and a millisecond earlier) to prove that I’m still the only one who really, really gets it. (ahem Zoolander)
  • How the hell are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?
  • I would rather try to carry 10 plastic grocery bags in each hand than take 2 trips to bring my groceries in.
  • I think part of a best friend’s job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die.
  • The only time I look forward to a red light is when I’m trying to finish a text.
  • A recent study has shown that playing beer pong contributes to the spread of mono and the flu. Yeah, if you suck at it.
  • Was learning cursive really necessary?
  • Lol has gone from meaning, “laugh out loud” to “I have nothing else to say”.
  • I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger.
  • Answering the same letter three times or more in a row on a Scantron test is absolutely petrifying.
  • My brother’s Municipal League baseball team is named the Stepdads. Seeing as none of the guys on the team are actual stepdads, I inquired about the name. He explained, “Cuz we beat you, and you hate us.” Classy, bro.
  • Whenever someone says “I’m not book smart, but I’m street smart”, all I hear is “I’m not real smart, but I’m imaginary smart”.
  • How many times is it appropriate to say “What?” before you just nod and smile because you still didn’t hear what they said?
  • I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars teams up to prevent a dick from cutting in at the front. Stay strong, brothers!
  • While driving yesterday I saw a banana peel in the road and instinctively swerved to avoid it…thanks Mario Kart.
  • MapQuest really needs to start their directions on #5. Pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.
  • Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died.
  • I find it hard to believe there are actually people who get in the shower first and THEN turn on the water.
  • Shirts get dirty. Underwear gets dirty. Pants? Pants never get dirty, and you can wear them forever.
  • I can’t remember the last time I wasn’t at least kind of tired.
  • Bad decisions make good stories
  • Whenever I’m Facebook stalking someone and I find out that their profile is public I feel like a kid on Christmas morning who just got the Red Ryder BB gun that I always wanted. 546 pictures? Don’t mind if I do!
  • Is it just me or do high school girls get sluttier & sluttier every year?
  • If Carmen San Diego and Waldo ever got together, their offspring would probably just be completely invisible.
  • Why is it that during an ice-breaker, when the whole room has to go around and say their name and where they are from, I get so incredibly nervous? Like I know my name, I know where I’m from; this shouldn’t be a problem….
  • You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you’ve made up your mind that you just aren’t doing anything productive for the rest of the day.
  • Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after DVDs? I don’t want to have to restart my collection.
  • There’s no worse feeling than that millisecond you’re sure you are going to die after leaning your chair back a little too far.
  • I’m always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten page research paper that I swear I did not make any changes to.
  • “Do not machine wash or tumble dry” means I will never wash this ever.
  • I hate being the one with the remote in a room full of people watching TV. There’s so much pressure. ‘I love this show, but will they judge me if I keep it on? I bet everyone is wishing we weren’t watching this. It’s only a matter of time before they all get up and leave the room. Will we still be friends after this?’
  • While watching the Olympics, I find myself cheering equally for China and USA. No, I am not of Chinese descent, but I am fairly certain that when Chinese athletes don’t win, they are executed.
  • I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello? Darnit!), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and goes to voicemail. What’d you do after I didn’t answer? Drop the phone and run away?
  • I hate leaving my house confident and looking good and then not seeing anyone of importance the entire day. What a waste.
  • When I meet a new girl, I’m terrified of mentioning something she hasn’t already told me but that I have learned from some light internet stalking.
  • I like all of the music in my iTunes, except when it’s on shuffle, then I like about one in every fifteen songs in my iTunes.
  • Why is a school zone 20 mph? That seems like the optimal cruising speed for pedophiles…
  • As a driver I hate pedestrians, and as a pedestrian I hate drivers, but no matter what the mode of transportation, I always hate cyclists.
  • Sometimes I’ll look down at my watch 3 consecutive times and still not know what time it is.
  • It should probably be called Unplanned Parenthood.
  • I keep some people’s phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call.
  • I think that if, years down the road when I’m trying to have a kid, I find out that I’m sterile, most of my disappointment will stem from the fact that I was not aware of my condition in college.
  • Even if I knew your social security number, I wouldn’t know what do to with it.
  • Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket, finding their cell phone, and Pinning the Tail on the Donkey - but I’d bet my a$$ everyone can find and push the Snooze button from 3 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time every time…
  • My 4-year old son asked me in the car the other day “Dad what would happen if you ran over a ninja?” How the hell do I respond to that?
  • It really pisses me off when I want to read a story on CNN.com and the link takes me to a video instead of text.
  • I wonder if cops ever get pissed off at the fact that everyone they drive behind obeys the speed limit.
  • I think the freezer deserves a light as well.
  • I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Miller Lites than Kay.

From Joyce's Desk: It's July, it's summer and it's party time!

Happy summer everyone...and Happy 4th of July!!

July is big month in our family, because in addition to the 4th of July festivities, we celebrate 5 birthdays and 2 anniversaries between both my husband's side and my side...yes, it gets a little hectic! And, since this is when the weather starts to really warm up, we love taking the party (er, parties) outside.

Backyard BBQs, park picnics, beach bonfires--cooking and dining al fresco with friends and family is a hallmark of summer. However, with all that celebrating, it's easy to forget about the enormous amount of waste that is often created - think single serving drinks (bottles, cans), paper plates, plastic utensils, disposable decorations, etc. Well, our friends over at Celebrate Green have put together some great ideas on keeping outdoor entertaining planet friendly. Check out their tips below. I'll definitely be using some of these tips this month.

Wishing you all happy summer celebrations!

Peace, Love & Chocolate,

Joyce

***************

Nothing says summer like red, white and green

For most Americans, July 4th marks the official start of summer and that means family and friends gathering together enjoying each other at picnics and barbecues. But all this celebrating can take a toll on the Earth (and cost a lot of green as well), so why not consider some alternatives to the ways we've traditionally celebrated summer. Here are just a few ideas:

Serve filtered tap water. It's so easy to hit one of the big box stores and pick up cartons of water if you're hosting a picnic or barbecue, but you can save money and the planet when you choose to drink and serve filtered tap water instead.

Knowing that bottled water (even by the case), is 240 to 10,000 times more expensive than tap water and that 40% of bottled water should be labeled tap water because that's what it is, you may decide that the "convenience" is simply not worth the cost. Instead, set out pitchers of iced tap water (print out this tongue-in-cheek label if you like). Ask a willing helper to keep the pitchers full.

Substitute reusables for disposables when possible. Picnics and barbecues have become synonymous with throw aways--plates, cups, napkins, tablecloths and decor. While there are more choices for disposables made from recycled and biodegradable materials, using what you already own and remains a more earth-friendly (and budget-conscions) choice.

If you don't own enough plates and glasses, why not:

  • Borrow. Friends and neighbors are usually happy to contribute
  • Ask everyone to bring their own place settings. That's what people used to do B.P.P. (before paper plates).
  • Hit your local thrift store. You'll likely be able to pick up dozens of plates very inexpensively and when you're done, you can donate them back.

When it comes to napkins, tablecloths and decor, think outside the paper box by decorating with items you already own, like sheets. Supply guests with red, white and blue fabric markers and set them loose. You'll end up with a unique table covering that you can use over and over again.

Washcloths make great napkins and if they're stained with barbecue sauce, use them for rags.

No need to buy paper or plastic decor items when you scour your home (and ask your guests to if you like), for objects in your preferred color scheme and integrate them into the decor. If you've got scrap paper in your colors, wrap it around empty cans and fill them with flowers (cans pictured, while made for the 4th, could be used all summer). Tie napkins with bits of ribbon and stick a flower, feather or leaves under the bow. If you're in crafting mode, make banners from old pairs of blue jeans, or flatware caddies from towels like the one pictured (make extras for guests who might want to take these home--sans your silverware!--so they'll always have their flatware at the ready). Pinwheels are fun, easy-to-make and decorative and here are instructions for making the recycled Christmas bulb candleholder shown above.

Clean up.You're probably shaking your head, "Well, of course we'll clean up, duh!" If you're partying at your home, this is no doubt true, but be sure to provide bins for trash and recyclables as well as for items that can be composted, assuming these services are available in your community. Place signs on each container indicating what should be tossed in which bin and encourage everyone to use them.

And if you're watching the town parade or or enjoying an outdoor movie at a local park where recycling bins are not provided, why not carry a bag so you can bring your trash home and dispose of it properly. This includes packaging from food items, cans and paper goods. While you're at it, how about taking a bag to pick up a bit of trash left by thoughtless individuals? After all, not everyone is as conscientious as you!

Cook it green. When it comes to the environment, barbecues of all kinds are problematic. The best way to cook outside in an eco-friendly way? A solar oven. You can purchase one, but to save money, gather a bunch of kids and make your own. Choose from among dozens of configurations using everything from tires to pizza boxes to a windshielf shade. Yes, cooking with solar takes more time, but hey, it's summer! And if you're only ready for baby steps, start by cooking part of the meal via solar. Pick up some veggies at the local farmer's market and grill them up. Once you see how easy it is and how yummy and fresh everything tastes, you may wave good bye to charcoal altogether.

Father's Day Video from "Evolution of Dad"
This video brought both tears and a smile... "In celebration of Father's Day, the filmmakers behind the Evolution of Dad documentary project filmed close to 150 people around New York City, talking about their dads. The interviews are touching, funny and sometimes heartbreaking..."

Funny! Happy Father's Day!
Okay...so, this is an old Pamper's commercial (from The U.K., I think) but it's pretty funny.

Joyce featured as a "Face of Fair Trade" on Change.org

Joyce was recently interviewed by Zarah Patriana, the Fair Trade editor for Change.org, and we (she) couldn't be more honored and excited. Check out the article.

Face of Fair Trade: Joyce Kushner of Coco-Zen

Change.org's Vision

Today as citizens of the world, we face a daunting array of social and environmental problems ranging from health care and education to global warming and economic inequality. For each of these issues, whether local or global in scope, there are millions of people who care passionately about working for change but lack the information and opportunities necessary to translate their interest into effective action.

Change.org aims to address this need by serving as the central platform informing and empowering movements for social change around the most important issues of our time.

From Joyce's Desk: Gift to Our Readers - One Day of Carbon Neutrality

So, in my daily scouring of the web for "green stuff", I learned about this viral campaign called One Day from Brighter Planet which allows people to give the gift of carbon neutrality for one day...at no cost to the "giver"!! - other than just filling in name and email address. The amount of carbon offsets given is based on current estimates that the average American emits 136 pounds of carbon dioxide each day.

I found this campaign on EcoSalon (a green blog/news site that I subscribe to) who was doing what I'm now doing of passing along this gift. I figured what the hell, I'll participate - they just need my name and email address. After clicking EcoSalon's gift link and filling in One Day's little entry form, I almost immediately received an email saying:

"Congrats, you're now carbon neutral for a day! 136 pounds of carbon offsets have been donated in your name by Brighter Planet."
Included in the email was a link allowing me to now pass on this gift to 5 other people.

So...to you, our readers, I'd like to pay this gift forward. The first 5 people to clink on this link (or the badge below) will receive carbon offsets from Brighter Planet to cover one day. Hope you'll join in and pass your own gift of carbon neutrality to 5 more people. Not only will you be helping to create more carbon offsets, but you'll be spreading awareness about clean energy.

Who knows, maybe the link will work on more than just the first 5...we haven't tested it out yet :)

From Joyce's Desk: Fun at SF Green Festival

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to exhibit Coco-Zen at this year's Green Festival in San Francisco, but I did get to spend a couple hours Friday afternoon checking it out with Max and saying hi to a few new friends. Here's a little photo recap of our visit (some of the pics were taken on my Blackberry, so not the greatest quality - sorry!).

With my little guy in tow, I donned my vegan shoes from Bamboo and my ReBagz sling bag and headed out to the SF Concourse over by the Gift Mart.

Once we got there, we stopped by the Coop America (soon to be Green America) member booth and got our pass for the day. Into the main hall we were immediately distracted by ALL the Clif Bar samples for the tasting. I didn't know they had sooooo many flavors! I discovered "Carrot Cake" (yummy!), while Max seemed to enjoy the "Peanut Butter & Jelly". Next we walked by the Manitoba Harvest booth selling hemp seed nuts. I figured I had to try them - tasted kind of like raw walnuts (interesting).

As we headed deeper into the halls, there was an amazing number of people (got a little too hard to take pictures while maneuvering Max in his stroller). I have to say, it was interesting to see that the Green Festival has become quite "main stream" as the number of folks in t-shirts, jeans and baseball hats far outnumbered those in dreadlocks and hemp clothing.

We took a little break from the crowds and headed into the "dining" area, where a cool band was playing. Max decided he needed to get up and do a little dance - I think he was trying to impress that cute little girl in the pink dress.

As we strolled around the food court, I quickly spotted the Organic Beer & Wine Garden...yes!! Max, however, happily settled for some refreshing organic lemonade.

There was also lots of yummy food to be had. I was especially amazed at how gorgeous the raw foods looked...and NOT just salads! Too bad we already had lunch - so many things I wanted to try. Of course, there's always room for a little Fair Trade chocolate tasting.

Before leaving, we wanted to make sure we said hi to a few new friends. Over at WorldOfGood.com, Alan posed for some pictures with Max. I ended up doing a quick little video interview as one of their sellers (scary...wondering if they will really post it on their blog), while Max scored some chocolate bars. In the booth next door was TransfairUSA (yeah Fair Trade!!!) We stopped to say hi and drop off a few Coco-Zen brochures.

Finally, it was time to head back home. On the way out, we stopped by Pangea Organics and picked up a couple of soap samples (the cinnamon with cloves is scrumptious smelling, and I love their packaging). Outside, the Drink No Evil bus eerily sat in the moonlight - almost like a last minute warning as you leave the festival.
